The Remarkable Story of Colloidal Silver
Silver, a solution as remarkable as it is ancient
Colloidal Silver is an age-old product. At BIORNIZ, our mission is to help you rediscover this precious metal with its many properties: silver. The earliest references to colloidal silver date back to Antiquity. Indeed, many civilizations such as the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians were already familiar with the benefits of silver. Hippocrates, probably the most illustrious physician of ancient Greece, mentioned the use of
colloidal silver in the treatment of wounds and infections. One of Hippocrates' most important observations about silver was its
antimicrobial action. He noted that colloidal silver could inhibit bacterial growth and prevent infections. Hippocrates specifically used silver solutions to treat infected wounds and skin
ulcers. The Roman philosopher Pliny the Elder also described the use of silver to purify water and prevent a number of disorders. These empirical observations laid the foundations for the therapeutic use of colloidal silver in the centuries that followed. This is how the use of colloidal silver as an antimicrobial agent came to be recognized in the traditional practices of many cultures around the world. For example, in Ayurvedic medicine in India, colloidal silver was used to
treat various skin conditions. Native Americans also used silver jewelry to prevent infections.
A therapeutic use of Colloidal Silver from the 19th century onward
It was not until the 19th century that doctors and scientists began to take a close interest in colloidal silver. In the 19th century, scientists such as the German physician Carl Crede and the French surgeon Jules-Émile Péan contributed to the study of silver's antimicrobial properties, thus confirming Hippocrates' insights from centuries earlier.
The Swiss chemist Carl Wilhelm Nägeli should also be mentioned:
he was one of the first scientists to study colloidal silver at the end of the
19th century. In the 1890s, Nägeli indeed conducted experiments on colloidal silver and observed its effectiveness against pathogenic bacteria. His work helped popularize the use of colloidal silver as an antimicrobial agent.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the French physician Henri Crookes
also studied the antibacterial properties of colloidal silver. In his book entitled "Colloids and the Ultra-microscope", published in 1916, he describes the antibacterial properties of colloidal silver and its potential in the treatment of infections. During the First World War, the antimicrobial properties of colloidal silver were widely used to treat infections in wounded soldiers. Dressings impregnated with colloidal silver were used
to prevent infections and promote wound healing. Thus, colloidal silver is a product with many virtues that BIORNIZ is committed to promoting.
Regulatory precision
Please note that since 2010, within the European Union, colloidal silver
is no longer considered a dietary supplement, unlike in the United States in particular, but only a cosmetic product.
